George A Thompson Memorial Scholarship Program - Overview
click to print this pageprint this page

George A. Thompson was a very active member of The Christiana Rotary Club. He received the Club’s highest honor when he was named a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of his service.  George's commitment to the ideals of Rotary, and its motto “Service Above Self,” were reflected in his relations with business associates, competitors, friends and his fellow Rotarians.  By providing educational opportunities to young Delawareans in George's memory, The Christiana Rotary Club wishes to recognize the contributions which George made to others by applying the principles of Rotary in everything he said and did in the community. In 2013, Christiana Rotary will be making 2 scholarship awards. At least one award is an academic scholarship to a senior who lives in New Castle County and attends a public high school in the County. The program provides funds to be applied to tuition over a 4-year period in the amount of $500.00 per semester (limited to 2 semesters per year) to any college or university selected by the student. The second award will either be a second academic scholarship or a grant to a senior who lives in New Castle County and attends a public school in the County where he or she is enrolled in a vocational or technical training program.

The vocational scholarship provides a 1-time grant in the amount of $1,000.00 to be applied to tuition to any post-high school educational institution selected by the student which provides vocational or technical training designed to lead to gainful employment.

The “Over the Rainbow” Performing Arts Scholarship has been established for a student pursuing a four-year degree in the performing arts. It has been established in memory of Vessa Fulton a dedicated Rotarian, a wonderful singer, dancer and actor, and an exemplary human being. Vessa lost her long battle with cancer in 2012.

The members of Christiana Rotary hope that upon graduation from college, all scholarship recipients will feel compelled to give back to the community, just as they were helped.
