Christiana Rotary Seeks Summer Camp Participants

Newark, DE—The Christiana Rotary is pleased to announce that they will be sponsoring campers from the area to attend Summer Camp at Camp Holiday Trails this summer. Camp Holiday Trails offers active year-round programming for children with chronic illnesses and special medical needs that prevent them from attending other camps. Under supervision of CHT’s medical staff, campers engage in a variety of traditional camp activities such as: archery, arts and crafts, drama, therapeutic horseback riding, swimming, canoeing, wilderness education, sports and organized games designed to build self-confidence.

Former Christiana Rotary President Steve Dewberry said, "Through participation in these activities, campers are reminded that at the heart of it all, their arthritis, asthma, IV chemotherapy, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, seizure disorder, heart disease, HIV, kidney disease, organ transplant, urological disorder, or visual impairment does not define them."

Applications are being accepted for Session I (Sunday, June 26 - Friday, July 8) and Session II (Sunday, July 10 - Friday, July 22). For more information or an application contact: Steve Dewberry 302 995-9550 dewbers@nationwide.com or Camp Holiday Trails 434 977-3781.

Selected Campers will be invited to a Rotary lunch where the campership will be presented.

School Kids In Need Have New Source of Clothes

November 1, 2004, Newark, DE - On Thursday, November 4, 2004, there will be a ceremony dedicating a new clothes closet at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School. The clothes closet provides school children who are in need with clean, comfortable, and weather appropriate clothes so that they can attend school with self esteem and confidence, and fit in with their peers. The clothes closet was made possible by the Christiana Rotary Club. According to the Club’s president, Stuart Sherman, there is an incredible need for clothes, and they are being distributed as fast as the clothes are coming in. "It has been established that there is a direct correlation between learning and the clothes that a child wears to school" said Sherman. Anyone who is interested in donating new clothes or used clothes that are in good condition, or in making a monetary donation to help stock the clothes closet, are asked to go to the Rotary Club’s website at www.christianarotary.org for more information.

Rotary Remembers Relief Effort In Jamaica

January 14th, 2005, Newark, DE - With the world’s attention focused on the Tsunami relief effort, it’s easy to forget about the children in Jamaica who have been harmed due to the damage caused by Hurricane Ivan. The members of a local Rotary Club have not forgotten, and they are raising funds that will be used to rebuild and strengthen the pre-school in Negril which is for 3 to 6 year old children. According to Cathy Anderson, the Club’s International Chair, "the people of Jamaica were hit very hard, and we wanted to make sure that their needs are not forgotten about due to the tremendous amount of publicity that’s been focusing the world’s attention on the Tsumani devastation." The Rotary Club of Negril which is spearheading the rebuilding effort. "We want to make the pre-school we have adopted a lot more secure for the next Hurricane so the walls and roof don’t cave in and the kids can actually afford to risk sheltering there as it will be a lot stronger than their own homes," said Negril Rotary’s spokesman, Gary Caesar, who added that "this is a fantastic project with huge benefits for 93 little pre-school children who attend the school."

Someone once said that if you think the cost of education is expensive, try calculating the cost of ignorance! The Rotarians in Negril believe that the lack of education is the root cause of almost all the ill fortunes that have befallen their community, and so they are focusing their energy, time and money on the youngest members of their community (3 to 6 years old) and their young parents.

They intend to provide both children and parents with the most basic skills of nutrition, hygiene, and literacy. The children, via an early child development program, will be significantly better prepared to capitalize on this by the time they enter the mainstream educational system. Many of the parents have not had the benefit of a full education, and too often have no family support structure. They are unable to adequately support their children academically, socially, or morally if they themselves have not been taught the basics. A single parent is even more severely disadvantaged. "If we are to help break that cycle, it has to start at this basic level and it is to this end that we are focused," said Elaine Bradley, Community Services Director for the Negril Rotary.

Christiana Rotary is asking Delawareans to help with this rebuilding effort by sending checks payable to The Rotary Club Of Christiana to:
  Christiana Rotary
  c/o The Christiana Hilton
  100 Continental Drive
  Newark, DE 19713

Please write the word "Jamaica" on your checks.  For more information, visit Christiana Rotary's website at www.christianarotary.org .
